If you "Pick a Point" then it will be a closed associative polyline, however if you "Select an Object" it will be polyline segments. This is because of the info AutoCAD gathers when you first created the hatch, with "Pick a Point" it is in effect creating a boundary for it self at that time which it can recreate.
